The voice of Dhas Bhasvodâs lead Seraph pilot came over the battlenet. âThe human Pelican is dropping flares in sets of one and two. These are likely signals.â
âWhat else would they be, Ferko?â Dhas asked. He and Castor were standing at the top of his Phantomâs boarding ramp, searching the ridge above for the spy and her brood. They had seen no sign of them in more than a quarter unit. âHave you detected any transmissions?â
âNo transmissions, Prelate. But there was a targeting laser flashing from the ridgetop.â
âAt the human Pelican?â Dhas asked.
âIn that direction, yes,â Ferko said. His gravelly Jiralhanae voice seemed to fill the interior of Dhasâs helmet. âBut the range was extreme. I cannot be sure it was illuminating the Pelican.â
âI can,â Dhas said. âYou are now empowered to strike.â
âI have no visual, Prelate.â
âAnd nothing from the spotters?â
âNot yet,â Ferko said. âOne has fallen silent, and the other is still searching.â
âBut you know where the targeting laser originated,â Dhas said. âStrike there. If nothing else, you may flush the quarry.â
âAs you command⦠beginning run in two centals.â
Dhas switched to his external voicemitter.
âThe spy mother has taken the bait.â He was looking at Castor, but speaking loudly enough so that the handful of adjutants standing behind them would also hear. âThe Seraphs saw them using a blink code, and the Pelican dropped signal flares.â
âPrimitive,â Arcas said. âAnd unreliable. Why would they not use a communications pad?â
âBecause they are too cunning,â Castor said. âThey assume we would hear the transmission and understand we have spies.â
âAnd because they have been living as Keepers for two years,â âGadogai added. âWhat would have happened to them if an unauthorized communications device were discovered in their possession?â
âThe same thing that I will enjoy watching now,â Castor said. He turned to Dhas. âYou have called for the plasma strike?â
âI have,â Dhas said. âBut we cannot be sure your spies will still be there. My pilots have no visual, and the spotters have not found them.â
âThat cannot be good.â
It was Castorâs lead pilot, a young Jiralhanae named Krelis, who said this. He stepped into the empty space between Castor and Dhas, intruding in a manner that would have earned a blow, were he Dhasâs subordinate. At least he had the wisdom to stand facing the same direction as his betters, rather than insult Dhas by turning his back to him.
âWhy would they choose now to disappear?â Krelis continued.
âBecause âGadogaiâs plan worked,â Castor said. His words were appropriately sharp, and the readout inside Dhasâs helmet showed Krelisâs face temperature spiking into the anger range. âThey believe their mission accomplished, and now they hope to evacuate before the UNSC strikes.â
âIs it wise to place so much faith in the plans of an infidel?â Krelis asked. âââGadogai has no devotion to the Great Journey.â
Castorâs voice assumed a cold edge. âHe has devotion to me.â He turned square to Krelis and spoke in a more measured manner, his forced restraint showing in the rounded peaks of the voiceprint audiograph scrolling across Dhasâs visor.
